Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2026: Custom Motorcycles, Black Hills Riding and the Spirit of Sturgis
The 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally brought riders from across the country back to South Dakota for ten days of motorcycles, custom builds, live entertainment and some of the most famous riding roads in America.
Held August 7–16, the 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally once again turned Sturgis and the surrounding Black Hills into a destination for motorcycle enthusiasts of every kind.
For us at American Freedom, one of the most interesting parts of an event like Sturgis is seeing just how much individuality still matters in the motorcycle world.
Motorcycles aren’t simply transportation for many riders. They’re personal. Everything from the paint and wheels to the handlebars, exhaust and engine covers can be an opportunity to make a motorcycle different from every other bike on the road.
Custom Motorcycles Are Still at the Heart of Sturgis
Walk through virtually any gathering of motorcycles at Sturgis and you’ll find bikes that have been personalized in completely different ways.
Some riders prefer subtle modifications that complement the original styling of their motorcycle. Others build machines where nearly every visible component has been changed.
That’s part of what makes motorcycle customization so interesting.
Two riders can start with the same Harley-Davidson model and end up with motorcycles that look completely different.

Harley-Davidson Remained a Major Presence in 2026
Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been closely associated with Sturgis for generations, and the company again had a significant presence at the 2026 rally.
Harley-Davidson brought its 2026 motorcycles to Sturgis for demo rides, including models such as the Road Glide 3, Road Glide Limited and CVO Street Glide ST.
But the factory motorcycle is only the beginning for many Harley owners.
Touring motorcycles including the Street Glide and Road Glide, along with Road Kings, Softails, Trikes and older Harley-Davidson models, provide owners with countless opportunities for personalization.
That’s one reason the aftermarket Harley-Davidson parts industry continues to be such an important part of motorcycle culture.
Riders don’t necessarily want their motorcycle to look exactly like the next one parked beside it.
Riding the Black Hills Is Part of the Sturgis Experience
Sturgis isn’t only about motorcycles parked along Main Street.

The Black Hills contain legendary motorcycle routes including Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road and Spearfish Canyon, along with destinations throughout the region that attract riders year after year.

For many riders, the rally provides an excuse to meet friends, discover new roads and spend days doing what brought them into motorcycling in the first place — riding.
Hundreds of Thousands of Vehicles Entered Sturgis
Even following the enormous 85th anniversary rally in 2025, Sturgis remained a massive event in 2026.
According to traffic counts published by the South Dakota Department of Transportation, 448,166 vehicles entered Sturgis during the ten days of the 2026 rally.
Those numbers help demonstrate the enormous reach motorcycle culture still has in America.
Thousands upon thousands of motorcycles converging on one relatively small South Dakota community also creates something that’s difficult to duplicate anywhere else.
